Medical Certificates
This section explains when you will need a sick note and how to obtain it.  It also tells you about other medical certificates.
Sickness Certificates
If you feel you do not need to see your doctor it is not necessary for your doctor to issue a certificate for the first week of your illness. For the first three days of illness you do not need a note at all.

From day four you must complete Self-certification form SC2 which may be obtained from your employer, DHSS or online [click here for online SC2]. If you are ill for more than 7 days you will need to make an appointment to see your doctor for a certificate (MED3). This can also be issued by the hospital if you are under their care.

If you require a sick note from your doctor for insurance purposes please ask your doctor for a
private sick note for which a fee is payable.
If your employer insists on a note to cover a period less than seven days we can issue a private sick note but there will be a cost involved which it will be your responsibility to pay.
